  1. Nice! As I was reading your experience I was thinking about mentioning Grex to you. I have tried out a couple less expensive 23g guns and haven’t had good luck. The same issues @Chet was mentioning. Wouldn’t sink the pins in hardwoods. Or they would jam up after a couple of nails. I first had the Bosch and I wouldn’t give that to any of you guys as I like you all to much. Second and current is the ridgid. It jams way less than the Bosch but it’s hit or miss on if it will sink the pin. Really I don’t even use it much with the worries of having a nail exposed where you were originally trying to hide one. Long story short is to buy the grex. Have used them in the past shooting thousands of pins. Not one misfire. Great tool! Guys don’t wait on getting a 23g gun. You won’t use your 18g after using it.

It is. I always mention to my wife that I could be spending this money at the local bar. Then she agrees to the purchase

Very good points guys. I think the upgrade will happen in the next year or less. Just had a few family things come up that have to be paid for first. I like the thought on putting the most expensive tools higher up on the list. Man this list just got really expensive! ?
  6. That is an awesome looking knife! The receiver of this gift will be damn happy!

That is an awesome trick! If I ever pull these knives out again im going to try that! Plan as of now is when these knives get dull is to replace the head with a byrd. Will see at that point if I want to part with that much money tho
  8. @Coop gold bond foot lotion is what I have used. Haven’t tried out the other guys recommend products.

Knives showed up today and got them installed. What a difference! After a little messing around I have a machine that I’m pretty happy with! Learned a few things in setting the jointer knives tonight. Since I recently swapped them out on the ridgid I had some practice going into this one. The head on the delta has the springs under the knives which works pretty nice. 1 spring was missing form the head which made that knife the most difficult to set. I figured I would get them close with a straight block of wood registering off the out feed table the check with a dial. I figure out to use the wood to push the knife down and lightly tighten one gibb bolt. I would then rotate the head and adjust the knife down with a smaller piece of wood and slightly tap the knife till the initial straight pice of wood sat flat on the outfeed table. Did this to all 3 knives and checked with the dial indicator. All were within .02. Felt that wasn’t enough difference to adjust any further. Ran a few pieces across the machine and it cut really nice! No snipe and even on some crazy grain ash minimal tear out.
  10. I’m going through the same situation with the hcm on a rolling cabinet. Haven’t bolted it to the cabinet yet for the tippy situation. Hopefully will try it out this week and will report back.
  11. Could you extend the top on the cart and keep the hcm on there as well?

New motor is in, vibration almost completely gone. Just need to put some new knives in and will be ready to go!

Update.... Put the new bearings in the motor, and still have a slight vibration. We figured out after checking with a dial that the shaft is just a little bent. After putting the motor back in and running the jointer for a min or two could smell the belt heating up. Ordered a new motor and it should be here monday.
  14. We are thinking exactly the same way! With the bench top that is stuck to the slab I think ill start with a old chisel and hammer, then on to the belt sander. Plan is to get the bottom cleared off then switch to the router leveling jig for the top to skim it off. I will also be taking it to be run through a widebelt sander. All the more reason for me to continue shopping for the 37" drum sander ? I think for the top coat on this that I might get a top coat epoxy, with as much epoxy that ran off the edge it might blend in better. Will find out more tomorrow night when I tear back into it.
  15. Pour two. Figured out where the leak was coming from. Filled it with hot glue. Crossing my fingers on this one.
  16. I used a propane torch. Just had to touch the epoxy with the flame to get them to pop. I have made quite a few fishing rods and use an epoxy to hold the guides and wraps on, with the clear you can really see the air bubbles and they pop super easy with very little heat. Emmi is a pretty good little shop helper! She comes up with some pretty neat scrap projects!

Yeah it’s neat to find scanned in original owners manuals. Whoever took the time to do something like that had quite the idea. Yeah the knives are pretty standard. Plan as of now is to put a set of new hss knives in, after they go dull to upgrade to the Byrd head. That is only going to happen if I can get the motor to stop vibrating.
  18. Well good news! I got the slab off my bench top! A couple of pry bars and some wood shims. A few choice words and a grunt and she let go. Bad thing is part of my bench top is now stuck to the slab. shouldn’t be to bad of a fix. Will use the router jig to shave the particle board off. Really am impressed with the strength of the epoxy. Never in my wildest dream did I think it would stick to a melamine top like that.
  19. Great explanation on the mortises. Thanks! Very nice work!

Doing a little research on this machine, found some cool facts about it. Was made in 1974 and was offered with 3 different motors. 3/4 hp 1 hp and 1 1/2 hp which mine has. Had the option of 2 different bases, a tin one and a cast iron option. I have the the tin. There are 4 tapped holes in the outfeed table. I figured it was a power feeder mount but it didn’t make much sense since they were in the path of the cut. Found out they offered a grinder attachment for sharpening the knives. From what I have read they are impossible to find.

Honestly never thought about that. Going to consider it. the previous owner asked me if I was going to paint it. Don’t think I’m going to since it is original paint yet.

Me to! I would like to buy a machine sometime and have it work perfectly out of the box.
  23. Wow that is fast on the mortises! Does the setup take quite a bit of fine tuning?

Another way to make a little bit of room is to make your drawer stock thinner than you normally would. I know it’s not much, but think you are looking for every bit you can get. It is a heavy drawer when full so might not be the best idea. Can you turn the way your files orientate? Might not get as many in the drawer but the width wouldn’t matter then. Seems like you will have plenty of depth to make it work.
