Ground breaking for Ray's shop

As I brought up in another thread, Ray is getting ready to build his new shop and has asked for some assistance on design and layout.  We spent several hours pouring over options and plans...  Altered drawings a great many times!  For the record, the building is 30 X 44.

I didn't spend any time on any real detail in doors and windows but, just got their rough dimensions in place.  Here's what we came up with..

The open area in the top there is for his wife so, the only thing we drew out there was electrical.  The separating wall was made extra thick so some sound dampening could be applied when the wall was built.  We did do an extra drawing with the mini split locations with dimensions for the contractor.

Here's a drawing with the tool layouts..

In the main shop area (~30'X30'), there were several drawings made.

  • Main tool layout
  • electrical layout - Some of this will be in the floor
  • DC layout - Will be sewer pipe so, just approximations for runs

All of these have included dimensions and allow for future growth.  The closet in the lower left corner is for the dust collector.

I think the contractor will do all of the shell and then Ray will be doing some of the electrical as well as most everything inside.  I'll try and get Ray to pop in and participate in this conversation..

One thing I was super glad I did in my garage, was having 110/220 outlets every 6' on the walls. Gives me plenty of options moving things around and doesnt pigeon hole me into 1 setup that I may only like for a few months or year. Maybe in a bigger shop this isnt as big of a deal since you will have plenty of space ??

Not sure on tools .. but for the dust collection, is it built out big enough to support an upgrade in the future? Not sure if hes going big already and sized for that?

Looks good to start though!

Power is a bit limited for him but, we did add 220 outlets in places where future upgrades could happen.

Upgrading his DC will most likely be a future project.  We just put the closet in there as a place holder.  Ray will be building all the interior walls.

Hello fellow woodworkers.  If you have been reading Kevin's posts, you know that this is an exciting time for us as we will be building our new shop / craft room. We were notified last evening that ground work may perhaps be starting as early as next week. The actual building however will not be starting until the first week of September (dang). I am going to be posting pictures of the progress along the way. First set I will be posting are what we needed to complete before anything gets started.

Yea it's getting pretty exciting.  Unfortunately they have been here for less then a day of work. All of the trades are exceptionally busy. Scheduled to actually build first week of September. Would really like to have it finished by then as hunting season is within a week or two and lots of the trades are very scarce during  that time or show up for only part of the day. Pad will be completed and should only take a week to complete.

I'd be willing to bet far longer to get it built based on the way the trades work here..  I do hope you're right though..

My neighbor is just getting his repairs done from the tornado, 3 months ago. He had the same problem with his trades. He has promised them each, a 12 pack of Corona on Friday, if they show on Monday. 8:00 Monday morning, they show up!

Good morning.  Have a few more pictures on the progress of the ground breaking for the future shop.  Contractor spent 4 hours breaking up the 16" slab with rebar on the jackhammer.  Pretty sure he was a little sore the next day.😬 He and a helper worked a full day breaking ground and hauling it away. He says gravel on Tuesday. We shall see.

Ready for a slab!  Nice!

Should know tomorrow  or Friday.

Wanted to post a few more pictures of the progress of the ground breaking for the new shop. My contractor spent about 4 hours the other day breaking up the concrete with rebar. The thickest end was 16". Sure he was sore the next day from using the jackhammer.  Today was the first full day of work.
