I have a roller on a glue bottle, doesn’t work that well as the hole in the bottle needs to be bigger. A simple drill bit would probably fix that issue. I recently bought a tightbond rubber glue brush and that thing is amazing! Just load the glue on and spread it around. Nicest thing about the brush is if you don’t get it rinsed out that the glue doesn’t stick to it, once it is dry can just peal the glue out.

Thanks for all the support guys! You guys are the best! Messed around with the top tonight and am satisfied with it. It will all work out even though it didn’t go according to plan. Am going to cut the ends, get them cleaned up and get it through the wind belt. Hopefully can do that by Saturday morning. Would like to get finish shot on it Sunday. The gap looks worse than what it is. Used my refurbished hand plane to trim down the dowels after flush cutting them. What a joy to use!

Reason am embarrassed by it is that it was one of those mistakes that I didn't expect myself to make. I will know to check for the next time, in all honesty I dont remember ever doing breadboard ends before. It has been a good experience or should I say learning experience. I think the fix I went with will work just fine, will plug the holes and nobody will ever know unless they are crawling under the table.

The thought of taking it off and plugging the holes did cross my mind, decided not to go that route as the holes in the tenons were hogged out to allow expansion didnt feel like I would have gotten a good fit that way.

Embarrassed to even share that mistake with you guys

Took the afternoon off work since we had 4” of rain yesterday and was raining again today. Finished up a closet system for a buddy and got to work on the table. The dowel rods showed up and I was excited to get the ends on. Did get the tenons glued in last night. Had no issues laying it all out and got the holes drilled in the breadboard end. Transferee the hole location to the tenons and moved the mark 1/32 or so. Problem was I moved it the wrong way. When I put the first end on and pounded the dowel through it made one very unsightly gap. Bone head move. Never gave it a second thought when I marked it out. Not blaming my buddy at all but we were talking the whole time and I mentioned to him how nervous I was about the whole process. I have never done ends like this before. Luckily the buddy and a neighbor were there while the glue was still wet. Got the dowel out of the center hole and ran the bit through with clamps holing it tight. Got the pin in with a tight joint. Couldn’t think of any way to solve this other than using a pocket hole on the bottom of the table that I will have to ream out to allow the movement. Didn’t have the right bit for this operation but did get one ordered. Didn’t go as planed but will work out.

Nothing wrong with equipment to make life in the shop easier, with kids shop time is limited have to get the most out of it you can.

Nope it’s pretty much flush. The ends will also be trimmed flush but am waiting to do that till the very end. Want to get all the movement out of the top before I trim. Am planning on taking the top back to the wide belt sander after it is pinned.

Found the dowel on Lowe’s website and will be delivered Wednesday. Hated to pay 8$ shipping for a $3 part so ordered a few other things to get free shipping. Makes sense to spend $40 to save $8. But at least I didn’t have to pay to ship it! I like the idea of the dowel plate, that thought has crossed my mind. Never did I expect that there would be no oak dowel within an hour drive. Got the breadboard ends grove cut tonight and am happy with the fit. Need to get the tenons glued into the top yet. Spent the rest of the night working on the feet. Finished machining them to size with the planer and drum sander. Got the mortises layed out and a few of them cut.

Got back to work on the table Friday night. Was really the only time I had all weekend to get some work on it in. Started by cutting the mortises for the breadboard ends, just used a 1/2 straight bit, plunge router and a router fence to get the job done. Worked pretty well but did smoke the bit with all the end grain. I stood the table up on end against my bench to do the process. Had to stand on a step stool to see what I was doing. At that height the dust really flew everywhere around the shop. I wasn’t able to use my dust collection on the router as I was plunging 2 1/16 of an inch deep. Got the ends milled up and cut the mortises into them. Used the same setup as on the top being sure to register off the top side of both pieces for alignment reasons. Then used a 1/2 rabbiting bit to cut the top tenon. Used the new bandsaw to resaw a few left over pieces to make the loose tenons. Saw worked perfectly doing this! The floating tenons did receive a 1/4 round over to fit the mortises. I made them oversized and fit each one individual. Had minor tweaks to make to some of them as the mortises were not all the same. Which didn’t matter much to me as they will never be seen. Did a test fit before I called it a night and was pretty happy how it all came together. Need to cut the grove in the ends yet to finish them up. Had to order in some oak dowel, never thought about it much till I was needing it. Figured the local lumber yards would have it in stock. They all carry a poplar dowel but no oak. The big box stores have it but they are all an hour away. All the routing with the straight bit made a huge mess in the shop! Did get it all pretty well cleaned up today along with the chore of taking out the dust barrel. It’s amazing how fast it fills up!

I have mostly pipe clams. For the money can’t go wrong. I have a few f style clamps that I don’t use all that often. My all time favorite clamps to use are the wooden screw clamps, so many uses for them.

Same here! A spot to put them would be really nice as well! Going to tackle that problem when this table is completed.

Same here, been buying some more clamps slowly. Usually grab one or two of them when I get to the box store. Had a chunk of pipe with threads on both ends that got cut in half for this project. I just needed quite a few of the clamps for this glue up. You guys know the old saying that you never have enough clamps. It really is holding true?

Can’t argue that one! The no school and in home daycare has the girls spending way to much time with each other! Always just aggravating each other.

That would be nice! I wouldn’t change a thing tho. Pretty good kids most of the time.

Don’t feel bad about the grays, I’m catching you everyday! With this no hair salons open here till recently the grey on my head really showed up! I don’t believe they come from woodworking as much as living with 3 women causes them. (4 women if you count the dog)

Great point! That is a thought that crossed my mind. Really need to find a good home for my clamps, wall space is really at a premium the way I have the shop set up.

They are tucked away in the 18’ floating tackle box, well most of them. Keep the new ones hidden in there from Courtney, last place she will ever look!

Yes I have to agree, through the whole process they have been pretty good. I understand that it took longer than I would’ve liked but I think that can be blamed on the covid thing.

Those are the fun projects! So much thought and daydreaming about them!
