previous builder to install a mantle just used scrap and like 3-4 random pieces just wedged in there.

felt like a died about 4 times lugging that beast around until I got it all broken down. Haha.

I think tomorrow I am going to going to cut some dominoes into the 45s to help with alignment and stopping any movement when glueing. Then just lots of blue tape and glue to wrangle this beast together.

Got the 45s cut and dominoed to help support and stop sliding when taped together … somehow forgot to take pics of any of that haha oops. Just imagine 10’ boards getting cut to 45 on the tablesaw. Then imagine dominoes being cut. Lastly imagine track saw cutting 45* on the ends when it’s cut to length  at 102” long.

still need to cut the 2 end pieces and then also cut the 2 support pieces and glue them together and then drill holes for the wall mounts. Finally stain and install.

Now that’s hard to imagine! How did they come out?

surprisingly well ... there were a couple spots where a couple boards got wiggly even with a feather board on there , but overall was happy with how it went. Nothing big enough to effect the overall look and it was all close enough to where I can probably just roll the edges over with a screwdriver.  Definitely a pain in the butt for sure working with those lengths in my garage!!

Here’s a flashback to relive how I cut down the the longer pieces ..

starting to glue up of the edges …

didn’t we talk about long pipe clamps? Haha would have been great …

gluing up the inner piece that the mounts will go into. Gluing 2 boards up and then going to drill my holes into them. This will just be glued to the top panel of the mantle

Looks good!  How high is it from the hearth?  Picture makes it look low.

Very low and pretty sure not meeting any safety standards! About 18-20” above. Luckily they never use the fireplace because of allergies so I felt better doing it after we talked about it.
