  1. And not sure I read this correctly but are the last pics of dry fit or glued up? I have done slatted shelves two ways. One, with the frame and slats Dominoed/m&t’s, and also, construct a frame where the frame is notched and the slats are half lapped and drop into the frame.
  2. Bryan, thanks for the input. Wife wants more shelf space than drawer, thus the reason for eliminating the top drawer. Plan is to build this in two sections, top shelf area and bottom drawer and support. Here is a rough drawing of the front, with one panel and two. My thinking on the doors is that two panels would help break up the long door and two, make it easier to cut the panels on the ts. And, a design/proportions guy, I am not! The drawer box will be 16” deep and approx 7” high. Here is a pic of a armoire that we purchased many years ago with one drawer at the bottom. This one has an area on the left for hanging clothes and shelves on the right side. There is a vertical divider where the doors meet than I don’t intend to have. The 41” shelves will go the full width. There is a mirror on the left door in case you are wondering what that is. So far, I only have the pieces cut for the two side panels and am certainly open for suggestions.
  3. Will the slatted shelf have it’s own frame or will the slats tie into the existing stretchers?
  4. One wide drawer and that’s where you come into play, later in the game on the bottom mount slides. Crown molding will be purchased and yeah, have done several throughout the house. My first attempt was actually upside down but I attest to this day that it was intentional. 😀
  5. Here is what I’m shooting for, construction wise. However, it will have only one drawer at the bottom. The doors will be raised panels which I will attempt on the ts. I’m thinking of breaking up the doors into two raised panels each. One, to make it easier to cut on the ts and two, to match our bedroom door. The br door has a 36” panel at the top and 24” panel at the bottom. Does that sound logical, 3/2 ratio?
  6. I went for the poplar and soft maple for the drawer. And birch 4x8 cabinet paint grade ply, 3/4”, 1/2” and 1/4” for the tops, bottoms, side panels and back.
  7. It’s unaminus ! 😀
  8. I think 15 min. each. The second one gives me something to look forward too.
  9. Now I’m confused, which happens often. 😀 By solid piece, would this be a frame with the piece being ply of the same thickness or a piece made of solid wood pieces, laminated together to form one big piece?
  10. Knotty alder is $1.95 where superior alder is $4.65 bf. Almost twice the price of poplar.
  11. Darn good thing I went with poplar as it was close to $400 which included 2 sheets of 3/4” birch ply and 1 ea. Of 1/2” and 1/4”. Also included soft maple for the drawer, 1/2 of which will go thru the planer.
  12. Will the legs be notched out to accept them or some other type of joinery?
  13. I’ll buy that. I didn’t know if it was just a single piece of wood, ie. stretcher or if it was in fact part of a solid panel.
  14. For clarification or maybe discussion, what is the horizontal strip of wood directly below the bottom drawer called?
  15. No disrespect to the guy giving the class but I believe I could pull those examples off without spending the $390. 😀
  16. Thank you my child! I’ll hit you up instead of Anna! 😀
  17. Sad part is, some folks get to go to Woodworking schools like Marc Adams and Lonnie Bird’s and I have to go to Anna White’s (?) school on how to paint a piece to make it look old. 🤪
  18. That’s ok as that’s what I have!
  19. And I have plenty of the dewaxed flakes.
  20. I keep forgetting about shellac even though Chet tries his best to keep it in front of me👍. So I’ve never used shellac with water based paint. And I can spray the shellac. Does it need to be the dewaxed?
  21. I hate painting baseboards, much less semi-rough furniture. Upside is that she doesn’t want anymore walnut in the bedroom, especially at the going price! Jamie, you did bring up an interesting point about the fuzzies and Kev about raising the grain. And I don’t want to use solvent based anything on this due to the smell and environment (clean up).
  22. The maple is $4.15 bf and the poplar is 2.45 and that is from a year old price sheet. I have a rough materials list and will call tomorrow for firm pricing. What I ought to do is give her $500 and tell her to buy one that she likes but I’m kinda up for the challenge.
