New Steam box

Recommended Posts

I needed a longer steam box for an upcoming chair build and found this one in FWW by Brian Boggs that i liked. I will be making a few changes using spray foam rather than a moving blanket, I will be making the cart so the box can be stored (upright) when not in use, and finally stainless steel vs the galvanized steal grate (just do to cost)

First up was to use a new tool the Shaper Caliper These things are awesome just measure, open the measurement in design mode and hit the button. I first used them to cut out the circle in the supports. The first one took about 45 min mostly becuase i haven't used the origin enough to remember everything. Once looked in the other three took about a minute a piece. I also purchased the Autopass feature. This is a software feature that automatically lowers the bit depth. So in a cut like this (3/4") it made four passes (you can adjust to your liking) 3 to cut the circle and then a clean up pass. While I wasn't thrilled with the $200 one time cost it really is an awesome feature makes it so much quicker since you don't have to stop after each pass to enter the new depth.

Very cool project that I'm sure you'll get lots of use out of!

I don't want to hijack this thread but, I have to ask about the stool in the second picture.  Is that something you built?  Can the hardware be sourced or did you make your own?  Are there plans/dimensions?

Apologies for the off topic question!

It was from plans in a ww magazine from a while back (I made it in 2016) I'll see if I can find it. Here is the hardware:

Probably best not to post them here but, I would appreciate them via email or PM.  Yours has some leg hardware as well, was that your addition?

Again, apologies for hijacking this thread!

Kev FYI I emailed you the stool article pics let me know if you have any issues with them.

First up I knocked out the latch for the cover

I sealed the rods, steamer connections, and drain hose barb with high temp sealant

Then I moved on to spray foam. I did it in small sections to insure it cured ok. FWIW I sprayed under the pipe prior to attaching the right side in this pic.

Then I let it cure...may have gotten a bit carried away 🙂

After cutting it down with a oscillating tool I glued the top on, made and installed some risers for storage, drilled holes for power cords, and installed a safety strap for when stored. I'll let it sit to insure everything is cured and next weekend give it a trial run.

Kev re what's in store for the steam box I plan on making a set of 8 of these Windsor Loop Back side chairs for our dining room. It will be a while but hopefully next spring/summer I have a few other projects to finish and then want to knock out a hanging tool cabinet for the shop first. I plan on doing the steam bending of the back loops later this year though.
