Laguna Drill Press

Well....  I did a thing.....

Went to my local dealer to see if I could see it in person.  The lady I usually deal with there made a comment that it didn't take long for me to get there.  A bit puzzled, I asked her what she meant and she asked if I was the one that just called looking for this drill press.  I laughed and told her no.  Well they only ordered one and I knew someone else was coming to look at it so, I just did it.  I did plug it in and get my hands on it for a few minutes, it's pretty nice.

Problem is it's too heavy to unload by myself.

Something I couldn't figure out in the store is how the depth gauge works..  It has a depth gauge on it but, I couldn't figure out how the stop worked.  Will definitely be something to figure out as I get through the manual.

I also noticed that the replaceable inserts in the table are below the surface.  Not ideal for woodworking but, that's a pretty easy fix.

More to come, @Ray Martin is coming to help me get this beast out of the truck..

Huge thanks to @Ray Martin for the help!

This thing is a beast but, we got it assembled and moved into place.  I didn't spend much time with it today as there was just too much to do after being gone for so long.

I did to a little reading and figured out the shop which is a manual stop similar to my old drill press.

It has a digital stop feature but, it's for use when tapping threads.  Once it reaches a specific depth, it stops and reverses.  I don't do a lot of tapping threads at the drill press but, I can see where this would be a handy feature for some.

More to come.  For now, it's a functional drill press for me.

So I have been watching review video's on these mostly good reports. Several features I really like the fact that you can get full travel by pulling the arm down once is at the top of my list. Look forward to your thoughts as you work with it for a while. One favor when you have time no rush at all...can you please grab me the outside base dimension's at there widest points and post them?

The widest item is the table itself at 22" wide.

The depth has a little wiggle room as the height adjustment handle can be put anywhere which could save you an inch or 2.  As configured in this picture, the depth is 25 1/4".

The height is as advertised in the picture above at 72 1/2".

On my list today is to level out the insert.  There are some adjustment screws so, I'll see if they have enough to get it flush with the top.  If not, then I'll just make some new inserts.

I'm also going to be doing some homework on clamping things to the table.  Unfortunately, I don't have too many clamps that fit through the holes to see if I like this configuration.  The only clamps like that I have are the ones for my Festool tracks and they won't fit through all the holes.  I may pick up a couple locally just to see if I'll need to come up with a different solution.

I did order a Magswitch fence for it which will be awesome if I can get the clamping situation figured out.

Next up was leveling the insert.  There was just enough room in the set screws to get the insert level with the top.  When I remake these in the future, I will be using slightly thicker material.

Next, I wanted to check the run out on the chuck.  My old machine was really bad so anything on this machine would be an improvement.  There were a few negative reviews around the chuck on this machine so, I set up a gauge to check.  My set up is for checking a table saw blade so I rigged this up to check the chuck.

I also don't have a precision shaft so, the bit itself could account for a little bit of the run out.  Looks to be a couple thousandths on the run out.  Sorry for the clarity, I took the video on my phone.  The machine is running at 60RPMs.

I have ordered a keyless chuck for it and may test again with a new chuck.

These results are fine for what I do but, it's interesting to see the actual numbers!

Not too much else I can do with the review for now until the new parts arrive.  If I started a new project today, I would use this machine as is and it would be fine.  I will shoot this test again with my regular video camera for video use when I talk about the machine.

Thanks and not to be a pain but I need the base itself trying to determine if it will fit inside my mobile base/cabinet

One other question how does the table lift mechanism work the one on my delta is quite hard to raise. Not a huge deal but curious

The base has a little shape to it but. it's 17" wide and 22 3/4" deep.

The lift mechanism works great, actually easier than my old Grizzly which wasn't difficult.  The tilt mechanism works great as well.  Although it has a "positive stop", there is a little play in it so, I needed to "fine tune" it a little with a square.

If you raise and lower the table on the drill press do you then have to realign the lasers.  On my new drill press, this is the case.

Hmm..  I haven't looked into that so, I don't have an honest answer for you..  Next on my list to look at!

Decided to run out to the shop and verify as it was an interesting question and one I hadn't considered.

Yes, the table height requires a readjustment to the lasers.  Makes sense considering the lasers are mounted to he head so would change with table height.

Sort of a long story.  I built a lumber rack to store my lumber vertically so I didn't have to climb a ladder to get lumber down, being a little bit in to my seventy's I am trying to keep my ladder work to a minimum.   The space that I ended using was were my drill press stood and I was never real happy with its new location so after evaluating how much I actually used it I started thinking about a bench top model and I landed on the Grizzly T31739.  It's a 12" and has the lasers, keyless chuck and a work light that works amazingly well and is variable speed 400-2600.  It's $415 but at the time I bought it, it was on sale for $299 plus they had sent me a coupon for another 5% off.

So far I have been real pleased with it.  When I first got it, I grabbed some different size hardwood dowels I have on hand and drilled corresponding holes.  I was real happy with the friction fit.  It didn't take a mallet to get the dowels in but I could hold the dowel and try to shake the block of wood off and everything stayed put.
